This vintage Type 407 Baby Solarspot, serial no. 27842, was manufactured by Mole-Richardson Co. of Hollywood, California, during the Golden Era of film. The Baby Solarspot was an industry standard, used as a key-light, back-light, or kicker where smooth, controlled light from spot to flood was essential — the kind of light that made Katharine Hepburn look like Katharine Hepburn.

Paired here with a handsome surveyor's tripod in warm oak with brass hardware, this piece reads as both artifact and sculpture. This one began in a Milanese workshop — a Mabef artist’s easel, beechwood and brass, built for the serious business of holding a canvas. John King, working out of Old Fort in the shadow of the Blue Ridge, saw something else in it entirely.

Bent gently backward into a graceful cantilever, the easel now stands as a floor lamp — adjustable to approximately five and a half feet — its long arm reaching over a chair or a reading nook with the quiet authority of a studio light. Threaded through with a twisted cloth cord and fitted with an inline toggle switch, it ends in an antique enamelware plate, ten inches across, that King left exactly as he found it: white interior, cobalt-edged rim, the exterior worn to a beautiful, battle-scarred black. A small globe Edison bulb completes it.

One of a kind. This one belonged to the American Broadcasting Company and was used in their New York City studios. The 1960s Paul Rand-designed ABC logo remains visible on the underside of the housing — worn from decades of studio use, and all the more extraordinary for it. A crank handle on the body shifts the 10" Fresnel lens from a focused spot to a broad, dramatic flood. Rewired for standard E26 bulbs, it works beautifully today. The tripod tells an equally improbable story. Bausch & Lomb — makers of fine optical instruments since 1853 — built this one to hold a 36" telescope. Oak legs, brass and copper fittings, nickel hardware. It extends to a full 88 inches or collapses to a more intimate 62. The craftsmanship is from an era when precision instruments were also beautiful objects.John King brought these two orphaned relics together, and what emerged is something neither could have been alone — part sculpture, part lamp, entirely singular. One of a kind.
