"Sun Stripes" Framed Watercolor on Aquabord

Regular price $300.00

The setting sun illuminated the white stripes that made this zebra mare grow. And her eyes! I later learned her unique black-and-white patterns, with the skin underneath being black, and serve multiple purposes, primarily deterring biting flies like tsetse flies and horse flies that transmit diseases, and possibly aiding in thermoregulation (cooling) by creating air currents, though camouflage from predators is less supported. Each zebra has a distinct pattern, developing in the womb, with black stripes having melanin and white fur having none.
