DETAILS

A well-made, wheel-thrown stoneware bowl with a wide flared mouth, defined shoulder, and a warm honey-amber glaze flecked with darker iron speckling — a glaze character closely related to the celebrated ash and iron glazes developed by Alfred University's ceramics program, one of the most influential centers of American studio pottery. A crisp incised line at the shoulder and a raw, unglazed stoneware foot show the hand of a maker working comfortably in the wheel-thrown functional tradition.

The piece is signed on the base, though the cursive incised mark is not fully legible. Given its glaze character, form, and known origin in New York's Finger Lakes region — home to generations of potters trained at or influenced by Alfred University — this bowl sits comfortably in the "Alfred School" lineage of American functional stoneware, alongside makers like Val Cushing who helped define the look.

A wonderful complement to other Finger Lakes studio pottery, with the same warm, earthy glaze palette and confident, functional form.
