The Atelier Lamp | One-of-a-Kind Artist Easel Floor Lamp
There is a particular magic in an object that has lived two lives. This one began in a Milanese workshop — a Mabef artist’s easel, beechwood and brass, built for the serious business of holding a canvas. John King, working out of Old Fort in the shadow of the Blue Ridge, saw something else in it entirely.
Bent gently backward into a graceful cantilever, the easel now stands as a floor lamp — adjustable to approximately five and a half feet — its long arm reaching over a chair or a reading nook with the quiet authority of a studio light. Threaded through with a twisted cloth cord and fitted with an inline toggle switch, it ends in an antique enamelware plate, ten inches across, that King left exactly as he found it: white interior, cobalt-edged rim, the exterior worn to a beautiful, battle-scarred black. A small globe Edison bulb completes it.
