Vintage Studio Pottery Covered Casserole | Speckled Stoneware, Signed

A generous hand-thrown stoneware casserole with a strap handle on the lid. The handle is attached with thumb-pressed clay buttons. The exterior has a warm ochre-and-rust glaze with heavy iron speckling. Inside, the bowl is a soft speckled celadon with visible throwing rings, framed by a raw, unglazed clay rim.

The base carries an incised signature, an "East Valley Pottery" stamp, and a potter's chop mark. Studio was likely located in East Valley, NY - south of Alfred, NY - typical of the small studios Alfred University graduates set up nearby in the 1960's - 1970's. The piece is signed on the base, though the incised mark is not fully legible. Given its glaze character, form, and known origin in New York's Finger Lakes region — home to generations of potters trained at or influenced by Alfred University — this bowl sits comfortably in the "Alfred School" lineage of American functional stoneware, alongside makers like Val Cushing who helped define the look.  

It's substantial enough to serve from and handsome enough to leave out as a centerpiece.
