The Mouse Artist | Original Silverpoint Drawing
He is going somewhere — this mouse in a coat and hat, brushes packed in his satchel, a small palette in hand, a rabbit bounding overhead as if to lead the way. He looks like someone with work to do and a forest to do it in.
This original silverpoint drawing by artist Sennyo Senn is rendered in Pure Silver and Sterling Silver with accents of Copper and 24K Gold. Silverpoint — also called metalpoint — was the drawing medium of Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance masters. By the 17th century it had all but disappeared, replaced by the humble pencil. A small number of artists have kept it alive, and Sennyo Senn is among them.
The secret of silverpoint is that it does not stand still. As the silver slowly oxidizes, the drawing deepens — shadows growing richer, tones shifting subtly across time. It is an artwork that continues to develop long after it leaves the artist’s hands.
